How Microneedling Works

A professional microneedling device uses very small needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin. These microchannels activate the skin’s natural repair response, supporting the production and remodeling of collagen and elastin over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does microneedling hurt?

A topical numbing medication is commonly applied before treatment to improve comfort. Sensations may include pressure, vibration, scratching or brief discomfort, depending on the treatment depth and area.

How many treatments will I need?

Some patients may benefit from a series of treatments. The recommended number depends on the concern, its severity, your skin response and your provider’s treatment plan.

When will I see results?

Improvement is usually gradual because collagen remodeling takes time. Results and timing vary according to the concern, treatment depth, number of sessions and individual response.

Is there downtime?

Temporary redness, dryness, tightness, sensitivity, peeling, swelling or pinpoint bleeding may occur. Your provider will explain expected recovery and when normal skincare or makeup can be resumed.

Can microneedling be combined with PRP or other products?

Combination treatments require a separate medical assessment. The FDA has not cleared microneedling devices for delivering cosmetics, medications, vitamin solutions or blood products such as PRP into the skin.

Is microneedling appropriate for everyone?

No. Treatment may not be appropriate for patients with certain active skin infections, bleeding conditions, immune conditions, uncontrolled diabetes, a history of keloid scarring, recent isotretinoin use or other medical concerns. A provider must evaluate your eligibility.

Microneedling is a medical procedure that should be performed with an appropriately authorized device by a qualified, trained provider. Potential effects include redness, dryness, tightness, itching, peeling, discomfort, bruising and bleeding. Less common risks include pigment changes, cold-sore reactivation and infection. Product combinations, suitability and treatment plans must be evaluated individually. Individual results vary.
